
The Dutch broadband internet market grew by 0.3 percent in the third quarter of 2018 to 7.48 million connections, according to the latest report from Telecompaper . T-Mobile led the growth with the addition of 17,000 subscribers, and Ziggo also added 13,000 customers. KPN solves 5,000 broadband subscribers in the period, and Tele2 shed 7,000.
Cable led the market with 3.46 million connections, up 0.4 percent. Fiber grew a stronger 0.8 percent to 1.21 million connections, while DSL was down 0.1 percent to 2.81 million connections.
Ziggo at almost 44% share, KPN drops to 40%
Ziggo remains the market leader with a market share of 43.9 percent, up by 0.3 percentage points from a year earlier. KPN (including Telfort, XS4ALL and Solcon) saw its market share drop by 0.2 percentage points in the quarter to 40.4 percent.
In addition to Ziggo and KPN, the market also has a number of smaller players, including Tele2 and T-Mobile, which are set to merge in Q1 2019. Tele2 is the largest of the smallest players on the broadband market with a 3.8 percent share, down by 0.1 percentage points from Q2 2018. In the third quarter, T-Mobile grew by 0.2 percentage points to reach 3 percent. Together the two have just under 7 percent of the broadband market, far behind Ziggo and KPN.
Revenues up nearly 5%
Revenues in the broadband market totaled EUR 511 million in the quarter, up 4.8 percent year-on-year. The growth was due to more connections as well as price increases at KPN and its brands Telfort and XS4ALL, as well as at Ziggo. Telecompaper expects sales growth of 4.8 percent to EUR 2.02 billion for the full year 2018.
For the period 2018-2022, the research agency predicts average annual growth or 1 percent in the number of broadband connections and 1.5 percent in revenues.
