Telefonica and Microsoft team up on private 5G for industrial use

Telefonica said its Telefonica Tech digital business holding company has partnered with Microsoft to jointly develop and offer private 5G connectivity and on-premises edge computing services for the industrial sector. The collaboration agreement will see the companies integrate their 5G private industrial connectivity and on-premise edge computing capabilities to offer end-to-end services to companies who want to implement demanding industrial use cases over high capacity, secure and reliable private networks.

The aim is to drive the digital transformation of their respective customers and enable the latter to automate and control their industrial processes via a combination of Telefonica’s private 5G connectivity and Microsoft's Azure Private Edge Zone.

Telefonica added that the partnership is designed to encourage customers to adopt new business processes included within the concept of “Smart Factory”, where the digitisation of equipment, intensive use of computing and artificial intelligence to facilitate business decision-making and the security of data are key.

From an operational point of view, Telefonica said the joint proposal will enable industrial customers to deploy private connectivity and computational capabilities on premise in an integrated manner, guaranteeing the highest levels of security, efficiency and performance to run mission critical and business critical applications.
