
Telefonica joins Mozilla project for open web devices

Mozilla announced partner support for its new mobile software initiative called Boot to Gecko. Telefonica, Deutsche Telekom Adobe and Qualcomm are the first to support the adoption of HTML5 as a platform for 'open web devices', Mozilla said. In a joint press conference at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Telefonica and Mozilla said they will will together to deliver the first such devices in 2012. Built based on an HTML5 stack with web APIs, the devices are expected to offer faster web browsing at a lower cost than the current smartphones relying on proprietary operating systems and apps. Mozilla said it will show at MWC what is possible with HTML5 open web technologies powering entire mobile device functions and experiences. The company also announced Deutsche Telekom's support of an open web platform. Specifically, Deutsche Telekom's Innovation Labs will join the Boot to Gecko project with dedicated development resources and will consider further steps based on this experience. The new partners follow the recent launch of the Mozilla Marketplace offering apps based on open web standards such as HTML5, CSS and JavasScript. At MWC, the company is also previewing Persona, an online identity system including Browser ID.
