Telia Finland to launch FWA with Nokia 5G gateway

Telia is launching the Nokia FastMile 5G gateway for 4G-5G fixed wireless access (FWA) on the Finnish market. Presented at the 2019 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the gateway provides fast mobile broadband to residential and business subscribers.

The gateway is a 3GPP-compliant 5G New Radio (NR) device that supports gigabit speeds on 4G/LTE and 5G technology. The indoor device, offering Wi-Fi access to the 5G network, is an alternative to homes and offices without a fast fibre connection. Telia said the product is simple to install and uses a visual guide to help customers identify the right location with the best performance.

Telia said it started testing with the device and the first consumer pilots are expected to start during the spring.

Telia launched a pre-commercial 5G network in Helsinki in September 2018 and went live with a commercial network in three cities in the beginning of 2019, when the Finnish network licences on the 3.5 GHz band came into effect.

Finnish operator DNA is to start offering fixed 5G broadband services in December, initially in single-family dwelling units in Helsinki, Tampere and Turku before expanding to other large cities next year. Nokia supplies 5G equipment for Telia network at Helsinki shopping centre

Nokia has announced that it will power Telia's 5G network at the new Mall of Tripla shopping centre in Helsinki. It will use Nokia 5G base stations and small cell equipment to serve retailers and entrepreneurs the chance to try out new services such as AR, VR, facial and video recognition, tailored in-store signage and entertainment. 5G will facilitate stock control and customer insights through video analytics of shopper behaviour.

Telia demonstrates Pivo facial recognition payments using 5G in Helsinki ice cream van promotion

Telia and Finnish payment application Pivo are demonstrating facial recognition verification for payments on 5G networks in a promotion from 14-16 August. They will be selling ice cream from an ice cream van for EUR 0.10 for customers paying using Face Pay by Pivo (Kasvomaksu by Pivo). Customers need a Visa or Mastercard and a device running on iOS 11.0 or later.

Telia, Atostek introduce 5G AI platform at ABB plant in Helsinki

Telia and software engineering firm Atostek are helping Finnish company ABB pilot what ABB calls the world's first industrial artificial intelligence application using 5G technology to assist the assembly of drives at ABB's Helsinki plant. The AI application will support the plant's workers by monitoring the assembly of the drives by camera and ensuring they are correctly assembled according to a customer's order and applicable work instructions.

Telia Finland Q1 like-for-like net sales drop 1.6%, adjusted EBITDA ex-IFRS 16 falls 8%

Telia Finland said first quarter net sales in reported currency rose 5.6 percent to SEK 3.86 billion from SEK 3.66 billion a year earlier but like for like, net sales fell 1.6 percent. The effect of exchange rate fluctuations was positive by 4.6 percent.

Elisa to start selling Nokia FastMile 5G router to customers in Q2

Elisa said it will begin offering the Nokia FastMile 5G router to customers throughout Finland in the second quarter. The device was presented at the Mobile World Congress this February, and uses 3GPP-compatible 5G radio equipment to enable residential gigabit wireless connectivity for households.

Telia Finland deploys 5G robot at Helsinki Airport

Telia Finland is launching a 5G network at Helsinki Airport and starting a project with airport operator Finavia to bring 5G to airport operations. Finavia will be Telia's first customer using the pre-commercial 5G network in Finland. A 5G robot has started operating in the non-Schengen area of T2 terminal to carry out service tasks.

Telia starts up 5G network in Oulu

Telia Finland said it has become the first operator to start up a 5G network in Oulu, in the Oritkari-Nuottasaari area, with the aim of benefiting businesses in the industrial and logistics sectors. Rauno Jokelainen, product development manager for Smart Radio at Nokia, said Oulu is one of the most important locations for Nokia's 5G R&D and mobile network products.

Finland awards 5G spectrum in 3.5 GHz auction to Telia, Elisa and DNA

The Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (Ficora) has announced the results of the 5G auction that began on 26 September for licences to use the 3410–3800 MHz spectrum band. Telia Finland won band A for the frequencies 3410-3540 MHz, with a bid of EUR 30.26 million; Elisa won band B from 3540-3670 MHz with a bid of EUR 26.35 million; and DNA won band C from 3670-3800 MHz with a bid of EUR 21.00 million.

Telia picks Nokia NetGuard for enterprise IT and communications networks in Sweden and Finland

Nokia said that Telia Company has selected its NetGuard Identity Access Manager to enhance the security of the IT and OT (Operational Technology) environments on its Swedish and Finnish networks, which connect approximately 10,000 employees. It said the Nokia NetGuard software will enable Telia to simplify security operations and enforce security policies more effectively, and accelerate incident analysis responsiveness by 80 percent.
