TeliaSonera said shareholders at its 12 April annual general meeting (AGM) will decide whether it should change names and become Telia Company. The new name would signify its strategy to become "a new generation telco", which it said was a "journey" that began two and a half years ago. Since then, a new strategy, organisation and operating model have been set, and it has acquired and divested companies as well as venturing into new areas.
In September 2015, TeliaSonera announced that it would reduce its presence in Eurasia and focus on the Nordic and Baltic markets. Recently, the operations in Estonia and Norway took the name Telia and four out of or seven markets are now carrying the Telia brand.
It said the word 'company' means an association of individuals who share a common purpose and that it realises its purpose to bring the world closer, on the customer's terms, every day. The proposed new name, Telia Company, signifies this through its local brands, which have already started to be "refreshed", it added.
