Telstra launches driverless car trial with NSW govt
Australian operator Telstra's has joined forces with the NSW Government and a host of partners to launch the NSW's first trial of a driverless vehicle in Sydney Olympic Park. The trial will run over a 2-year period. 

According to Telstra, the trial will showcase how the transport industry will be shaped with the advances in automation technology and the IoT. The trial aims to find the best ways to harness the next generation of driverless technology and continue to improve safety and reliability for transport customers and road users in NSW. The NSW Government expects office workers at Sydney Olympic Park to be using the automated shuttle by next year.

UK govt confirms trials of semi-automated HGVs

The UK government has announced a trial of new HGV technology called 'platooning' where up to three wirelessly-connected vehicles will travel in convoy with acceleration and braking controlled by the lead vehicle. It has confirmed GBP 8.1 million in funding for trials to be conducted by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL). The trial will include three phases, with the first focusing on the potential for platooning on major roads. Trials on major roads are expected by end-2018.

Lyft to launch self-driving car rides in Boston this year

Ride-hailing company Lyft has announced plans to build its own self-driving car technology and launch its autonomy programme in Boston by the end of the year. Riders who sign up for the pilot may be automatically picked up in a self-driving car built by one of a number of manufacturers working with Lyft, rather than a human driver, company officials told the Washington Post.

Hyundai to develop self-driving car with Mobileye

Hyundai Motor will cooperate with Israeli technology company Mobileye to jointly develop a driverless car, The Korea Times reports. Hyundai's vice-chairman Chung Eui-sun visited Israel in May to discuss a partnership for developing a self-driving vehicle. "Since Vice Chairman Chung visited Israel, working groups from both companies met to discuss collaboration", said an unnamed Hyundai Motor representative. "But we have yet to reach a conclusion as the dialogue has just started", he added.

Five EU test sites prepare for driverless car road trials

The Belgian city of Anvers, alongside four other sites within the EU, will be starting work on a project in the coming months which aims to test autonomous driving on public roads from 2019, reports Gazet van Antwerpen. Ahead of these trials, Anvers has received funding to equip two sections of motorway with sensors designed to guide connected cars. The other four sites chosen to participate in the project are motorway lanes in the vicinity of Lyon (France) and Vigo (Spain), and between Rotterdam-The Hague

Nvidia ties up with Volvo Cars, Autoliv for driverless cars

Nvidia said it is tying up with Volvo Cars and airbag and car seat component manufacturer Autoliv to develop systems and software for self-driving cars. Volvo and Auto have formed a 50-50 automotive software called Zenuity to develop driverless car technologies. Production vehicles built on the Nvidia Drive PX car computing platform are planned for sale by 2021.

Norwegian govt proposes new law on driverless cars

The Norwegian government has put forward proposals for a new law to allow tests of driverless cars, and comments should be submitted within three months. Minister of Transport and Communication Ketil Solvik-Olsen said the aim is to support the development of new technology in Norway. The proposed legislation will take the safety of vehicular traffic and pedestrians.
