Telstra sets traffic record with free data day
Australian operator Telstra announced a new record in mobile data traffic on 03 April, driven by its offer of free data to compensate for a network outage last month. Total traffic reached 2,686 TB, which is 46 percent more than the amount downloaded on a free data day on 14 February and three times more than a normal workday.

The operator said it reached the peak network traffic level of the previous free data day by 08.00 hours on 03 April and stayed above that level until midnight. A few spots experienced localised congestion on the network due to heavy traffic, but Telstra said overall the network performed well. The company reiterated that it's conducting a through review after two major network outages already this year.

Changes have been implemented to increase the capacity and path diversity of critical signalling channels and a temporary layer of traffic management protection has been added to minimise the impact of events like those on 9 February and 17 March. Within a few days Telstra said it expects to augment capacity in a key platform (Home Location Register – Front End) that manages customer subscription data. In conjunction with its partners Ericsson, Cisco and Juniper it has assembled a team of internal and external engineering experts to do an end-to-end review of the network.
