Tencent's WeChat app passes 1 billion users milestone

Chinese chat app WeChat, a unit of Tencent, reached 1 billion monthly active users during the Lunar New Year in February, South China Morning Post reports, citing Tencent chief executive Pony Ma Huateng. The figure represents an increase from 980 million in the third quarter of 2017.

According to the Tencent executive, more than 688 million WeChat users sent or received digital versions of ‘hongbao’, the traditional Chinese red packet containing cash and given as a gift during the new year holiday season, bringing the monthly active users of WeChat hongbao to 800 million.

Tencent ziet omzet met 50 procent stijgen, winst neemt met bijna 100 procent toe

Het Chinese internetbedrijf Tencent meldt over het vierde kwartaal van 2017 een omzet van 66,4 miljard yuan, 51 procent meer dan een jaar geleden. Alle divisies droegen bij aan de groei. De operationele winst steeg met 85 procent naar 25,7 miljard yuan terwijl de nettowinst met 98 procent toenam naar 20,8 miljard yuan.

Tencent lifts revenues over 50%, profit almost 100% in Q4

Chinese internet group Tencent said revenues for the fourth quarter jumped 51 percent from the year before to CNY 66.4 billion. All businesses contributed to growth, with revenues advancing 37 percent at Value Added Services, and lifting 49 percent higher at online advertising, where they were helped by Tencent Video and video streaming services. Revenues increased 32 percent at online games, driven by smartphone as well as PC games.

WeChat to relaunch 'tipping' feature on iOS

Tencent's social media platform WeChat plans to reactivate its "tipping" feature used to send cash to content creators. WeChat has reached an agreement with Apple regarding this "feature with Chinese characteristics", Reuters reports, citing WeChat president Allen Zhang. The statement was made at the annual WeChat developers conference in Guangzhou.

China tests e-identification system on Tencent's WeChat service

The Guangzhou government in China has released the country's first batch of "WeChat identity cards", which enable owners to identify themselves using facial recognition technology on smartphones and an AI platform, reports Xinhua news agency. The programme is expected to launch across the country in January. Verified users will be able to do things like checking in at hotels by scanning their faces with their phones. End-users' identities are authenticated through an AI system.

WeChat leads China's mobile messaging market 

Mobile messaging service WeChat is by far the first app for users in China, according to a report from eMarketer on worldwide mobile messaging users. In 2017, more than 494 million people in China are expected to use the app at least once per month, with 84.5 percent of all mobile phone messaging app users in the country on the platform. Mobile messaging is the prevalent form of digital communication in China, partly because email did not take off there as it did in other countries.
