TIM aiming to become 'pure digital player' - CEO

Telecom Italia (TIM) is preparing to lead Italy's digital revolution in close collaboration with other companies, said the company's CEO Amos Genish at an event in Turin. Revealing that TIM will unveil a new three-year business plan to position the group as a "pure digital player and not a telecoms operator" in February or March 2018, Genish said TIM is in the best position in Italy to lead the next wave of digital transformation in view of its existing EUR 4 billion investment and a determination to focus on future-proof technology rather than legacy networks.

The chief executive also confirmed that the company is open to collaboration with parties helping to roll out the infrastructure to provide the backbone of Italy’s digital transition, including rival Open Fiber. “We are open to discuss any collaboration that is beneficial for the parties as well as the country,” he said, according to Reuters. Genish last week said TIM would be prepared to discuss a commercial agreement with wholesale broadband operator Open Fiber but is not interested in the possibility of merging its network with that of its rival.

Italian undersecretary responsible for the telecommunications sector Antonello Giacomelli was also present and was the first government representative to officially appear at a TIM event in three years. “I have had the chance to appreciate the effort and quality of the projects presented by TIM. As a government, we count on the collaboration of private operators to win a challenge that should be tackled with a long-term vision not only for infrastructure but also for innovative services,” he said.
