Twitter releases music service in six markets

Twitter has announced the release of Twitter #music, a new service to allow users to find music. It is available for download at the Apple App Store and in a web version at music.twitter.com. The service uses Twitter activity, including Tweets and engagement, to detect and bring up the most popular tracks and emerging artists. Users can visit their favourite acts’ profiles to see which artists they are following and to listen to songs by those artists. Songs can be tweeted directly from the app. The service is available now in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

Twitter #music currently carries tracks from three sources, iTunes, Spotify and Rdio. Previews from iTunes are heard by default when exploring music in the app. Rdio and Spotify subscribers can log in to their accounts to hear full tracks in those catalogues. Twitter said it would explore and add more music service providers. It will bring the service to Android and to more countries.
