Twitter is testing doubling the maximum number of characters in a tweet to 280 from 140. The new limit is available to a "small group" of users to start, the company said.
The extended limit does not apply to users tweeting in Japanese, Chinese and Korean. The characters used in these languages mean they can express much more within the 140-character limit than other languages. According to Twitter, 9 percent of tweets in English reach the maximum 140 characters compared to just 0.4 percent in Japanese.
