Twitter throttled in Russia for alleged content violations

Russian federal telecommunications regulator has started slowing down Twitter for alleged violations of harmful content regulations. Based on the law on the domestic internet and the company's alleged refusal to take down the content after warnings, the regulator ordered Twitter be throttled on all mobile devices and on 50 percent of fixed devices.

The watchdog claims that it has sent more than 28,000 warnings on the issue to the social network since 2017, involving 2,569 illegal posts, mainly related to drugs consumption, invitations for suicide of adolescents and child pornography, and these posts are still available on the social network, according to the regulator. Twitter could be blocked in Russia if it refuses to comply with the requirements and face a fine of RUB 8 million. Google recently paid a RUB 3 million fine for the same violations in Russia.
