The UK government has published a call for interested participants in the Trans Pennine Initiative (TPI), which will test ways of providing high-quality and uninterrupted passenger connectivity to trains using 5G. The Trans Pennine railway line runs between Leeds and Manchester. The project is a joint effort between the Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) and 5G Testbeds and Trials (5GTT) programmes, in cooperation with Network Rail.
The department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport said that the companies selected to take part in the trial will be given the opportunity to deploy their trial radio equipment on the TPI pilot route without the need to invest in trackside infrastructure, benefiting from financial support for the installation.
Among the areas of focus, the pilot will look at capacity, coverage and security in a live environment. Additionally, the participating companies will have access to a new 5G facility located in the town of Melton Mowbray.
