The UK Government is looking at options to boost stake investment in British technology companies to help them compete in the 5G market, The Times has learnt. This is part of a wider plan to reduce the UK's reliance on Chinese company Huawei for 5G technology.
The plan would also involve working with international partners to create a new alliance to pioneer development of future technologies, with the UK having already approached the US government about the alliance. This could involve the 'Five Eyes' intelligence partners as well as G7 countries.
Meanwhile, The Sunday Times reports that Huawei is set to hold 'crunch talks' with Downing Street this week to try and get information on the government's intentions. This follows reports that the Prime Minister was looking to reverse its decision to allow Huawei to build one third of the 5G network.
