Uninor achieves first breakeven circle in Uttar Pradesh East
Telenor announced that its Indian subsidiary Uninor has reached breakeven in its first region. In Uttar Pradesh East circle, the mobile operator now generates more revenues than operating costs, the equivalent of EBITDA breakeven. Uninor serves over 7.2 million customers in UP East, out of a total base of over 30 million. Telenor claims this is the fastest breakeven by any mobile operator in any region in India. Uninor said its operating costs are at INR 0.18 per minute, the lowest among all operators in the circle, while its spectrum usage efficiency is 40 percent higher than the other operators. Telenor expects its remaining circles to begin achieving breakeven in the months to come. The company recently narrowed its focus to nine circles in India, in order to accelerate profitability.
