Uninor's Gujarat operations achieve EBITDA breakeven

Indian mobile operator Uninor said its operations in Gujarat have achieved EBITDA breakeven, writes The Economic Times. This is the second circle to reach the target, after Uttar Pradesh East late last year. CEO Yogesh Malik said the operator's cost structure of INR 0.19 per minute is already 25 percent lower than large incumbents, and it expects to drive growth further by reaching out to customers through new and alternate channels. He also claimed that achieving break-even in Gujarat "in a record span" proved profitability did not hinge on "expensive tariffs or complex high-end services". Uninor is targeting EBITDA and eventually cash-flow break-even in all six circles where it operates within the current calendar year. The company now plans to invest an undisclosed sum in expanding its mobile network in Gujarat, starting next month with 500 new mobile sites. Huawei and Nokia Siemens Networks are its principal network gear suppliers, while Alcatel-Lucent manages the Gujarat network.
