US vendors lose USD 47 bln in sales after NSA leak

US vendors of cloud and outsourcing equipment and services will lose around USD 47 billion in revenue from non-US customers over three years as a result of the surveillance tactics of the US National Security Agency. The figure was estimated by Forrester Research based on interviews with businesses and vendors. The market researcher noted that the amount is much less than the USD 180 billion initially expected. Less than a third of non-US companies said they had moved their data away from US-based partners, suggesting a limited impact on the cloud market. Shortly after the NSA story leaked in 2013, Forrester predicted that companies would stick with their US partners but increase their own security. That theory has proven true, the market researcher said, with more than 90 percent of those surveyed saying the news led to an increase in the use of encryption technologies.
