Vaio close to PC merger deal with Toshiba, Fujitsu

Vaio, a PC manufacturer spun off from Sony in 2014, is hoping to close a merger deal with the PC divisions of Toshiba and Fujitsu by the end of March, Bloomberg reported, citing a statement from Kidemi Moue, the CEO of Sony’s Japan Industrial Partners. Vaio expects to own the biggest stake in the merged company, which could help the trio save on research and development and scale production, Moue said.

The CEO noted the shrinking PC market and highlighted the merits of working together to make the most of research, production volumes and marketing channels, with “minimal cannibalization.”

The potential venture would focus on the domestic market and stick to its core business of making PCs at the outset, Moue said. Targeting overseas markets with other forms of hardware remains a possibility, considering Vaio’s recent release of a Windows 10 smartphone and plans for a robot companion product, he said.
