VMware confirms takeover of SD-WAN specialist VeloCloud

VMware has confirmed the takeover of SD-WAN specialist VeloCloud Networks for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition will help expand VMware's portfolio in the enterprise networking market and software-defined networks.

The transaction is expected to close in VMware's fiscal Q4. The company said the takeover does not affect its guidance for annual results.

VeloCloud's cloud-delivered SD-WAN software is deployed by more than 1,000 customers, both directly by enterprises and by telecom and managed services providers serving enterprise customers. Service provider customers include AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Macquarie Telecom, MetTel, Mitel, Sprint, TelePacific, Telstra, Vonage and Windstream.

VeloCloud's product simplifies wide-area networks, delivering virtualized services from the cloud to branch offices and mobile users. It leverage x86 edge appliances to aggregate multiple broadband links at the branch office, and using cloud-based orchestration, connects the branch office to any of type of data centre: enterprise, cloud or software-as-a-service. VMware plans to integrate the SD-WAN offering with its own vCloud NFV platform for communication service providers virtualising their network functions.
