Vodafone Germany starts SmartPass m-payments

Vodafone Germany said is tying up with Visa Europe to start a mobile payment service for physical shops, petrol stations and restaurants. The Vodafone Wallet service will start operations on 16 December and transactions will be processed in cooperation with Visa, through a service called Vodafone SmartPass. The SmartPass service has been developed and distributed by Wirecard Group.
The partnership will start with about 800 locations in Dusseldorf but will gradually cover 30,000 places across Germany.

SmartPass is like a Visa card that can have money loaded onto it. As well as paying for goods and services, it can also be used to transfer funds to another mobile handset or to deduct money from a Giro account. Across Europe, there are more than 1.2 million Visa contactless terminals that enable payments using the Vodafone Wallet or SmartPass NFC sticker.

Vodafone launches SmartPass payments in Italy

Vodafone Italia introduced the SmartPass mobile payments system and Vodafone Wallet. SmartPass is a NFC-based payments system that allows customers to wave their phone at a point-of-sale terminal in order to pay for goods and services. A PIN is only needed for purchases over EUR 25. Wirecard announces EUR 11 mln capital increase

German provider of electronic payment and risk management services Wirecard has increased its share capital against cash contribution from authorized capital by EUR 11 million, from EUR 112 million to EUR 123 million. Wirecard has issued 11 million shares, each with a notional par value of EUR 1. The new shares are entitled to dividends as from 1 January 2013. Vodafone Germany confirms higher smartphone sales

Vodafone Germany announced that smartphones accounted for 86 percent of all handset purchases made by its customers in 2013. This increased to 90 percent over the Christmas period, and is up from 55 percent in 2011. Samsung was the most popular smartphone maker with Vodafone customers in 2013 accounting for over 40 percent of sales. It was followed by Apple, Sony, HTC and Nokia.
