ZTE plans smartphones with Mozilla OS by December
ZTE is working with Mozilla to release handsets with the Firefox browser developer's new mobile operating system. The software will be available in the December quarter, ZTE Executive Vice President He Shiyou told a briefing in Beijing, reported by Bloomberg. ZTE is in talks with overseas carriers to offer devices with the new operating system to reduce its reliance on Android. The company uses Android on about 90 percent of its smartphones, with the rest using Microsoft's Windows Mobile.

ZTE sees Mozilla, better known for its open code Firefox browser, as a way to reduce its dependence on Google's Android OS. The executive said that if consumer studies show that the Firefox ecosystem is ready, the company may launch a Mozilla mobile in the US, also this year.

Firefox OS haalt 1% marktaandeel in 2013

Firefox OS pakt eind 2013 één procent aandeel op de smartphonemarkt. Volgens Strategy Analytics weet het nieuwe mobiele besturingssysteem van Mozilla in het entry-level segment marktaandeel af te pakken van Android. Naar verwachting wordt een eerste smartphone op Firefox OS begin 2013 op de markt gebracht. Het systeem wordt ondersteund door onder meer Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia, Telefonica en Telenor en hardwareleveranciers ZTE en TCL.

Mozilla demonstrates smartphone with Firefox OS in Brazil

The Mozilla Foundation presented a prototype of a smartphone equipped with the Firefox OS at the Qualcomm IQ 2012 event in Sao Paulo. The device aims to provide the features of a smartphone at the price of a feature phone. The device is based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, with a 3.5-inch screen and digital camera. Telefonica first to launch Firefox OS powered devices

Industry support is growing behind Mozilla's plans to launch a new fully open mobile ecosystem based on HTML5. Mozilla has confirmed that the operating system will use its Firefox brand, powering the launch of smartphones built entirely to open web standards, where all of the device's capabilities can be developed as HTML5 applications.
