ZTE is set to be awarded the EUR 1 billion contract to upgrade the mobile network of the newly-created joint venture between Italian operators 3 Italia and Wind, according to unnamed sources cited by Reuters. The operators are now formally controlled by the joint venture created to combine their businesses after parent companies CK Hutchison and VimpelCom last month announced the completion of the corresponding transaction. The new entity will officially begin offering services in January and wants to quickly upgrade its entire network with 4G technology.
Italian daily Corriere della Sera subsequently added that, under the terms of the deal, around 10,000 base stations will be upgraded by ZTE over the course of the next two to three years. The merger between 3 Italia and Wind was first announced over a year ago and is set to create Italy's largest mobile operator with around 31 million customers.
