Liberty Global appoints VodafoneZiggo CEO to head Ziggo Group ahead of 2027 listing, picks CFO from Sunrise

Liberty Global said it plans to appoint VodafoneZiggo chief executive Stephen Van Rooyen as CEO of Ziggo Group, a newly created Benelux telecoms business combining VodafoneZiggo in the Netherlands and Telenet in Belgium. The group is preparing for a planned listing on Euronext Amsterdam in 2027.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has officially completed its long-awaited TV signal digitisation project, modernising its communication infrastructure and public broadcasting. Now that the digital signal is broadcasting from the BHRT building, the country sheds its status as the sole European nation without digital TV. Minister of Communications and Transport Edin Forto hailed this achievement as one of the most crucial infrastructural transformations in the communications sector in recent years.

Barcelona Supercomputing Center unveils latest EUR 10 mln quantum computer

Barcelona's Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) has inaugurated a new quantum computer, EuroQCS-Spain, backed by a EUR 9.8 million investment from the European Union and Spain's Secretariat of State for Digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence. The system will be integrated into the MareNostrum 5 supercomputer and introduces analogue quantum technology alongside the facility's existing digital quantum systems.

Brazil launches Infovia 03, doubling internet speed in Amapa

Brazilian Minister of Communications Frederico de Siqueira Filho was due to inaugurate Infovia 03 in Macapa, state of Amapa, on 01 June. Through this project, internet service providers in Macapa will now be able to offer broadband at up to 2 Gbps, doubling the previous 1 Gbps top speed. In Afua, Para, on Marajo Island, speeds will jump from 300 Mbps via radio to 750 Mbps via fibre-optic cable. Furthermore, Infovia 03 should reduce internet outages by providing another access route for both Amapa and Para.

DSTelecom to bring fibre to every parish in Ribeira de Pena

DSTelecom has announced plans to expand its fibre optic network across the entire municipality of Ribeira de Pena by the end of June 2026, connecting approximately 2,500 more homes to advanced broadband services. For the first time, the towns of Alvadia and Canedo will gain access to this infrastructure. Existing coverage will also be strengthened in Santa Marinha, Cerva, Limoes, Ribeira de Pena (Salvador), and Santo Aleixo de Alem-Tamega.

Ethio Telecom has expanded its 4G mobile broadband network to 52 more towns in nine regions, namely Oromia, Amhara, Southern Ethiopia, Gambella, Benishangul-Gumuz, Harari, Somali, Tigray and Afar. The scheme develops fast broadband coverage far beyond major cities and regional capitals. Oromia and Amhara dominate the latest roll-out, accounting for roughly two thirds of the newly connected towns.

Tecno says its partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) supported refugee pupils in Ethiopia and Tanzania in 2025 by building classrooms and clean water facilities. US smartphone shipments reached 33.4 million units in Q1 2026, down 3 percent from Q1 2025, according to the latest data from Omdia. The year-earlier quarter was inflated by vendors/carriers building up inventory ahead of potential tariff announcements by the US government. US smartphone shipments in Q1 2026 were also impacted by fewer carrier upgrades, increasing storage/memory costs and delayed handset launches.

Dutch provider Odido is increasing the monthly price of its "Opnemen" TV recording add-on from EUR 5.00 to EUR 5.99 as of 01 July, while integrating Videoland Basis into the package. The updated bundle, renamed "Opnemen + Videoland Basis", combines recording functionality with 200 hours of storage across 44 TV channels with access to Videoland's entry-level streaming service.

Eir to switch off 3G mobile data network from October

Eir has announced plans to start decommissioning its 3G network in phases over several weeks from start-October 2026. This supports its ongoing 4G/5G mobile network upgrade programme. Eir said the switch-off will impact a "very small proportion" of customers using 3G-only services, who will be contacted directly by the company with clear guidance on how to upgrade to high-speed mobile data services. Calls and texts will remain working for all customers as normal after October.

Koodo offers free 5G speed upgrade to customers

Canadian MVNO Koodo, contract-free mobile subsidiary of Telus, is upgrading new customers with 5G-compatible devices to 5G speeds automatically, at no extra cost. The speed upgrade of up to 1 Gbps will be available to new customers across all Koodo Pick Your Perk plans; and to existing customers with compatible devices on a Pick Your Perk plan. The automatic speed upgrade will be completed over the next six months. Customers without a 5G-compatible device will remain on the 4G LTE network.

The UK government is considering new proposals to impose tougher penalties on ship owners/operators that damage underwater internet cables.
