Compared with the average monthly fee of EUR 39.82 in all Western European countries, fixed broadband services are cheaper in France, the UK, Germany and Denmark. At the same time, dual play packages offer more value for money than single play packages and triple play packages offer the highest average download speed.

Average broadband price rises in 2010

During the first three quarters of 2010, the average price of broadband packages rose from EUR 34.52 in Q1 to EUR 43.93 in Q3. One of the reasons can be the slight devaluation of the Euro. However, the main reason for the high increase in price, almost 30%, is the fact that more packages have been taken into account to produce the overview. Where there were around 710 packages included in the research in Q1 2010, over 850 were looked at for the Q3 research. Comparisons have been done between Q1, Q2 and Q3, since there were few noticeable differences between Q2 and Q3

UK average broadband speed breaks 5 Mbps barrier in July

The average broadband speed in the UK has now broken the 5 Mbps barrier to reach 5.11 Mbps, according to the latest broadband speed test results from broadband.co.uk. Virgin Media retained and extended their lead as the UK's fastest broadband provider in the UK with an average of 10.04 Mbps, becoming the first provider to ever break the 10 Mbps average speed barrier. Be/O2 were in 2nd place with an average speed of 5.75 Mbps in July, followed by TalkTalk with 4.38 Mbps, Sky with 3.99 Mbps, BT with 3.71 Mbps

Zen reaffirms commitment to broadband speed code

UK ISP Zen Internet has reaffirmed its commitment to the Ofcom voluntary Code of Practice for Broadband Speeds. Zen said it welcomed the more focused approach to the principles within the code, but stressed that it believed there were areas where the Code could be more forceful, especially regarding fair usage policies and traffic management.

UK ISPs respond to Ofcom broadband speed announcement

Various UK ISPs have issued statements responding to Ofcom's latest broadband speed research. Felix Geyr, Head of Home and Broadband for O2 UK, said the research should lead to improved clarity for customers and provide a better customer experience. He said O2 welcomed the study and was pleased that O2 and sister company Be Broadband came out as the fastest DSL providers in the UK. Geyr said he believed customers deserve transparency in terms of the line speed they will receive and that Ofcom's announcement
