African mobile market consolidation gets underway in search for growth

The African mobile market has started a new round of consolidation, with Orange taking the lead as others such as Airtel and Millicom (Tigo) narrow their focus. In the past few months, Orange has made three acquisitions, while Airtel announced "right-sizing" plans in at least five markets. The M&A activity underlines the growth opportunities for international operators in sub-Saharan Africa, which offers the highest economic growth rate in the world and a young population eager to embrace the mobile internet. At the same time, operators are focused on managing their costs and risk in a market
