Consolidation and the risks of the WhatsApp takeover

The big question about Facebook's takeover of WhatsApp is whether the price tag of USD 19 billion was too much. We considered this earlier, pointing to the network effect, opportunities for monetisation and the strategic value. With that last point, the acquisition of WhatsApp needs to be seen largely as a defensive move: Facebook needs to keep customers on board and keep WhatsApp out of the hands of rivals, such as Google.
