SMS: used mainly when Whatsapp is not available

Wednesday 27 February 2013 | 11:47 CET | Author: Eva van Kruchten | Background
The mobile messaging service WhatsApp has taken off to such an extent in the Netherlands that the word whatsapp has become a common verb in the Dutch language. While Whatsapp is quickly replacing SMS, consumers still find reasons to send a traditional text, the most important being that not everyone uses Whatsapp. Eight out of ten Whatsapp users say they still use SMS to send messages to people who don't have Whatsapp. Over half (57%) said they will also send SMS in response to SMS received, according to research by Telecompaper.
