Vodafone leads European consolidation, Liberty Global to focus on UK, others retreat or form new breeds of competitors

Vodafone's takeover of four country operations from Liberty Global is an important development for the European telecoms sector. Still, the market remains fragmented with dozens of operators. With all this M&A going on, is there a drive towards consolidation, or is it just a dance of musical chairs not leading to anything much in terms of reducing the number of operators? Whatever the case is, new types of operator are forming with a focus on convergence (cable + mobile), open access fibre or infrastructure.
