Vodafone and Ziggo merger may lead to wholesale cable access

Vodafone and Liberty Global are in talks about forming a joint venture in the Netherlands. This would include their respective activities in the Netherlands - Vodafone's mobile services and cable operator Ziggo. The news is not surprising, and the JV structure will help the companies overcome their differences about the balance of power. Similar to Liberty Global's plans in Belgium, where its subsidiary Telenet is buying mobile operator Base, the Netherlands would have a second near-national, integrated operator, alongside the PTT.
