Vodafone, Liberty Global deal may face trouble in Germany, Ireland

Vodafone is reportedly contemplating merger talks with Liberty Global to create a new telecom powerhouse in Europe. Since the sale of its stake in Verizon Wireless, Vodafone has been enhancing its mobile operations with the acquisition of cable operators (Spain, Germany), fixed network operators (UK, Greece) and more focus on marketing fixed network services (the Netherlands, Italy). A possible merger with Liberty Global would fit this strategy as the companies overlap in six European countries: Ireland, Germany, Hungary, Romania, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
