Germany's new mobile network operator 1&1 has signed an agreement with Vantage Towers to install 5G antennas. Vantage Towers will be responsible for services relating to approval procedures, preparatory work and the construction of new antenna sites. 1&1 will rent the individual mobile sites for at least 20 years, and the leasing contract can be extended several times.
1&1 Mobilfunk, a subsidiary of 1&1, has signed a long-term agreement with Vantage Towers to supply up to 5,000 antenna locations throughout Germany. Vantage Towers will provide passive network infrastructure to 1&1. During the network construction phase, 1&1 will be able to access several thousand existing towers of Vantage Towers, and new antenna locations. The company has agreed to the joint use of 3,800 roof and mast locations until the end of 2025, with a potential expansion to up to 5,000 sites.
Fibre backhaul with Versatel
1&1 Mobilfunk has also signed an inter-company agreement with 1&1 Versatel Deutschland for the leasing of fibre-optic lines and data centre infrastructure with an initial term until the end of 2050. 1&1’s antennas will be connected to fibre and to data centres.
The company plans four central data centres for the core network and over 500 decentralised data centres, enabling short transmission paths for the use of real-time applications. 1&1 Versatel Deutschland owns fibre-optic transport networks across Germany and will be responsible for the access network, in particular fibre-optic lines and setting up and operating the 1&1 data centres.
