3G licensees required to provide free internet to schools

The Thai telecommunications regulator will require winners of the upcoming 2.1 GHz spectrum auction to provide wireless internet to some 45,000 schools across the country. Each of the licensees would have to provide internet access at a speed of 2 Mbps for free for five years to 15,000 schools. The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) will sign a memorandum of understanding with the education ministry to promote the project. The ministry will also develop content for the schools in the project. The NTC is expected to auction three 3G licences in September with Advanced Info Service (AIS), DTAC, and TrueMove all expected to participate.
