3GPP completes delayed 5G NR Release 16 spec
Global mobile standards body 3GPP has announced the completion of Release 16 of its 5G New Radio (NR) specifications around 3 months after it was planned due to the decision to hold meetings online during the Covid-19 pandemic. Release 16, or “5G Phase 2”, is described as a major release for the project because it brings the 3GPP’s IMT-2020 submission – for an initial full 3GPP 5G system – to its completion.

While the previous release formed the basis for commercial standards-based 5G NR deployments, concentrating above all on improving mobile broadband, Release 16 focuses on expansion into new areas, such as support for industrial IoT, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) applications, integrated access and backhaul (IAB), 5G satellite access, Local Area Network support in 5G, wireless and wireline convergence for 5G as well as unlicensed spectrum (5G NR-U).

Separately, the 3GPP announced that Release 17 completion dates, initially scheduled for 2021, are now “at high risk" of being delayed in view of the switch from physical to e-meetings.

The decision takes into account slow work this year due to virtual, rather than face-to-face meetings. 3GPP to decide in December on possible delay to Release 17

The 3GPP has warned that its next major release of 5G mobile network standards may be delayed, due to the inability to hold face-to-face meetings during the coronavirus pandemic. It has been holding virtual meetings since early this year, which has already resulted in a few months delay in the standards process. It will decide at the next plenary meeting in December whether it can still meet a late 2021 schedule for the initial stage of Release 17.

Equipment vendor Ericsson has declared its Radio Access Network (RAN) technology development processes to be fully compliant with the new Network Security Assurance Schemes (NESAS) standards set out by 3GPP and the GSMA.
