About 14% of Dutch worry about privacy when using digital assistants

Friday 12 July 2019 | 13:43 CET | News

About 14 percent of all Dutch people do not use digital speech assistants such as Google Assistant, Siri (Apple) or Alexa (Amazon) because they are concerned about their privacy, according to research by Telecompaper’s Consumer Insights panel, conducted in July.

These privacy concerns may not be unjustified, as appears from reports from the Belgian TV channel VRT and Dutch broadcaster NOS about conversation leaks from Google’s smart home devices.

1 out of 3 Dutch people use digital assistants

Around 34 percent of all Dutch people use digital speech assistants, 58 percent do not yet do this and 8 percent are not yet familiar with the phenomenon. Men use digital assistants considerably more often (41%) than women (27%); 6 percent of men say they use digital assistants every day, against 2 percent for women.

Digital speech assistants are most commonly used for searching the internet (61%), setting up navigation (34%) or calling contacts (33%). Yet many Dutch people are not really satisfied with digital speech assistants: 35 percent do not use digital assistants (anymore) because they work more slowly than if they did performed the action themselves.
