ACM director calls for businesses to self-regulate online to avoid consumer abuse

Monday 10 September 2018 | 11:19 CET | News
Businesses must stop taking advantage of predictable consumer behaviour online, according to Cateautje Hijmans van den Bergh, a director at the Dutch competition regulator ACM in charge of the digital economy. In an op-ed in the business paper Het Financieele Dagblad, she said a new standard in menu architecture is needed to prevent businesses from abusing the growing amount of digital information they have on consumers. A discussion at the European level is needed, she said, calling for industry to take the initiative and develop a self-regulatory code.
