African smartphone market shrinks by 18% in Q1 because of Covid-19

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused one of the largest quarter dips in Africa's smartphone market since 2015, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC). The IDC's latest report shows that shipments declined 17.8 percent quarter on quarter (QoQ) in Q1 to 20.1 million units. The overall mobile phone market was 46.8 million units, down 20.5 percent QoQ, with feature phones accounting for 57.1 percent of all handsets, with smartphones at 42.9 percent.
