Africell picks Angola Cables network to provide connectivity

Africell, the fourth mobile operator in Angola, has selected Angola Cables to provide wholesale IP transit and connectivity service for its network. The partnership will give Africell customers fast data, low latency and nationwide internet access. The Angola Cables infrastructure connects to the primary IXP, Angonix, and provides backhaul support and connectivity to all the major telecom operators in Angola and internationally. 

Christopher Lundh, CEO of Africell Angola, said that the partnership with Angola Cables is an important step in providing secure data and internet access and ensuring uninterrupted local connectivity.

Angolan fourth mobile telephony operator Africell, which will start operations in December, will need 2,000 people to distribute or market SIM cards. She added that at least 70 percent of the mobile phone operator's workforce will be Angolan.

Africell obtains 8 years of tax reductions to fund Angolan expansion

Angola's fourth mobile operator Africell has secured tax incentives including a reduction of the final rate of Industrial Tax to 3.5 percent for a period of eight years, ITWeb reported. Minister for Telecommunications, Information Technology and Media Manuel Homem said the contract with Africell includes a programme for coverage between urban centres and rural areas, with a target of 60 percent coverage of urban areas within eight years of operation.

By deploying a new network, Africell will be able to take advantage of the latest cloud technologies to achieve cost efficiency gains from shared infrastructure, as well as improved control and flexibility.

Angola's Instituto de Gestao de Ativos e Participacoes do Estado (IGAPE) has launched a limited tender by prior qualification for the sale of the 51 percent stake owned by MS Telecom in Net One – Telecomunicacoes, reports Lusa. The tender is open to national and international investors, and interested parties should submit their applications by 25 June. The remaining stake is held by Israeli group Mitrelli.
