AFTIC fines Telefonica, Telecom Argentina for GSM migration

Argentina's new federal telecommunications regulator AFTIC has fined the local units of Telefonica and Telecom Italia for migrating fixed copper lines to wireless GSM technology without permission. "The areas migrated by Telefonica and Telecom Argentina to so-called fixed GSM technology are not among those permitted under current regulations," said AFTIC in a statement. Under current rules, the provision of basic telephone services using wireless infrastructure is confined only to rural and suburban areas, but the use of GSM technology is permitted in other areas if prior authorisation is
