Alcatel, Goldman Sachs discuss asset-backed loan - report

Alcatel-Lucent is talking to Goldman Sachs about a loan worth an undisclosed amount, people familiar with the situation told Bloomberg. The terms call for the network equipment maker to offer some of its assets as collateral. The funding would go towards strengthening Alcatel-Lucent's balance sheet following rising losses and a steady cash burn. Alcatel-Lucent is also considering the sale of assets such as its enterprise unit and undersea cable-making division. Talks about both subsidiaries are at a very early stage, and that the two may raise less than one billion euros, the sources said.
