Algerie Telecom plans LTE fixed broadband service

Algerie Telecom plans to roll out a LTE network to offer fixed wireless broadband services, CEO Azouaou Mehmel announced at a forum organised by the paper An Nasr. The operator is currently acquiring the equipment needed and hopes to launch the service in the first quarter of 2014, the paper Elmoudjahid.com reports. The announcement comes shortly after the launch of 3G mobile services in Algeria. The CEO also said the operator will raise the minimum ADSL speed to 1 Mbps in the first quarter, without a change in price. This is part of ongoing investments in the network, supported by a 15-year loan of DZD 115 billion from the government. Mehmel noted however that investments are offset by continued cable theft, which cost the group an estimated DZD 400 million in the past year.
