Alibaba hires US lobbyist
Chinese e-commerce group Alibaba.com has hired a lobbying firm headed by former White House official Kenneth Duberstein as part of its exploration of a possible bid for all of Yahoo, a person familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal. The company said in a US congressional filing on 23 December that it hired the Washington, DC-based lobbying firm Duberstein Group, which is headed by the former chief of staff during the Reagan administration. The move may be an attempt to pre-empt any opposition from the US government over the Chinese company taking a stake in or acquiring significant parts of Yahoo!. Other Chinese companies such as Huawei have faced political opposition when pursuing takeovers or contracts in the US.
