Altice Portugal demonstrates 5G technology with Huawei

Altice Portugal is working with Huawei on the rollout of 5G networks and conducted the first demonstration of the technology in Lisbon, using a prototype Huawei router with speed of 1.5 Gbps. CEO Alexandre Fonseca expects the first commercial devices will arrive in Portugal in 2019 or 2020, although regular users are unlikely to have access to the technology before 2021 or 2022, Reuters reported.

The demonstration followed two years of research and testing. For his part, Chris Lu, head of Huawei in Portugal, projects his company will develop a 5G smartphone prototype by next year or in 2020.

Altice Labs activates 5G Mini Bus in Aveiro

Altice Portugal and Ericsson have activated a 5G Mini Bus in the city of Aveiro, as part of the Techdays Aveiro 2018 event, reports Pplware. The 5G Mini Bus, which also includes the participation of CarMedia and EasyMile, who provide the multimedia interface and the standalone vehicle, is a self-driving vehicle with capacity for six people. It features access to the Ultra TV content platform developed by Altice Labs in partnership with the University of Aveiro.

Portuguese govt to set up 5G testing zones

The Portuguese government announced the creation of "free technology zones", in particular in rural or peripheral areas, for operators to test 5G before officially launching the technology, reports Jornal de Noticias. According to the Secretary of State for Infrastructure, Guilherme W. d'Oliveira Martins, these will be space to replicate real-world conditions to test new 5G services and network interoperability.

Vodafone says no business model yet for 5G in Portugal

There is still not an ecosystem or a business model for the introduction of 5G technology in Portugal, Vodafone Portugal CEO Mario Vaz told Jornal Economico. He said that Vodafone Portugal is already allocating a large part of investment in the network to preparing for 5G, and Portugal should be ready by 2020 for the arrival of 5G.

Huawei targets sales of 3 million smartphones in Portugal in 2018

Huawei became the preferred brand of Portuguese smartphone consumers in May, having sold 32 percent more units than in the same period of the previous year, reports Tek. This corresponded to a 52 percent increase in value, that allowed the brand to take a 28 percent share of all smartphone sales in the domestic market, compared to 23 percent a year ago.
