Amazon Music HD to remaster songs, albums into Ultra HD with Universal, Warner

Amazon Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group will together remaster thousands of songs and albums to Ultra High Definition, for Amazon Music HD customers. The partnership will cover music to be streamed of all genres and times, In addition, music from artists such as the Eagles, Elton John, Linkin Park, Tom Petty, Ariana Grande, Jon Pardi, Shawn Mendes, Lady Gaga, Lil Tecca, Selena Gomez and Post Malone, among others, have been remixed in 3D Audio formats including Dolby Atmos and Sony 360RA, for a more immersive listening experience, Amazon said. 

No financial details were disclosed about the partnership. 

The company said that its Amazon Music HD service, launched last year, already lets people stream 5 million songs in Ultra HD. The service costs USD 12.99 per month for Prime members, USD 14.99 per month for Amazon customers, or an additional USD 5 per month for current subscribers, to Individual or Family plans. Amazon Music HD is currently available to stream in the US, UK, Germany, and Japan. It recently also started rolling out in Spain, Italy and France.

From June, Apple Music subscribers will get access to the more than 75 million tracks in lossless audio, at no extra cost. In addition, the company is introducing the feature Spatial Audio based on Dolby Atmos, giving artists the opportunity to create immersive audio experiences with multidimensional sound and clarity, Apple said.

German media commission approves linear TV licence for Amazon

The Commission on Concentration in the Media (KEK) has approved a broadcasting licence for Amazon Prime Video. Amazon plans to launch a linear television service for Germany. Amazon Digital Germany had applied to the regulatory authority for new media in Bavaria (BLM) for a licence to provide a nationwide service under the title Prime Video Live. Among other things, Amazon wants to broadcast live top games from the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday evenings from the season 2021/2022.

Tencent-led consortium to acquire additional 10% stake in Universal Music from Vivendi

The Tencent-led consortium that acquired 10 percent of Universal Music's share capital in April is set to increase its stake in the Vivendi subsidiary to 20 percent. Closing and payment of the transaction will take place during the first semester of 2021, subject to regulatory approvals. Vivendi said that the cash generated may be used to reduce its financial debt and finance share buyback and acquisition projects.

Amazon has begun rolling out its Amazon Music HD service in Spain, Italy and France a year after launching the higher quality subscription tier in the US, Germany and Japan.
