Android hits 84%, consolidates smartphone market dominance

Google's Android OS increased its dominance of the global smartphone market in the third quarter of 2014, capturing an 83.6 percent share of all smartphones shipped worldwide, up from 81.4 percent in the year-earlier quarter. The latest data from Strategy Analytics revealed that Android's gain came at the expense of every major rival platform, thanks above all to low-cost services and user-friendly software that remain attractive to hardware makers, operators and consumers worldwide. The quarterly data also showed that Apple iOS fell to a 12.3 percent market share from 13.4 percent a year
