Apple cancels plan for second Danish data centre

Wednesday 12 June 2019 | 11:54 CET | News

Aabenraa municipal council in Denmark has announced that Apple informed it in a brief conference call that it would not go ahead with constructing a data centre there after all. The plan had been announced in summer 2017. Instead, Apple will concentrate on its other Danish data centre site in Viborg, and aims to sell the Aabenraa plot.

Municipal director Stig Isaksen said the decision came as a surprise to the borough, which had cooperated with Apple for some time on the project. He said his impression that this was a business decision taken in the US and had nothing to do with conditions on the ground. The council’s strategy remains to have two data centres running and two in the planning stage in 2022, he added.

News agency Ritzau commented that in March, Facebook scrapped plans for another Danish data centre in Esbjerg, but still plans one for Odense.
