Apple iPhone X tops holiday phone shipments - Canalys

Apple shipped 29 million iPhone X units in the fourth quarter, including 7 million to China, making that model the best-shipping smartphone over the holiday season, according to the latest study from Canalys. Demand was driven in operator-centric markets by people upgrading their phones, and so being able to spread out payments over many months. Canalys said the performance was impressive for a device priced at USD 999 but that it was not the fastest ever for an iPhone. Shipment numbers were slightly below industry expectations, which means the price tag still had an effect.

Apple’s iPhone SE, 6s, 7 and 8 models also shipped well in Q4. The older handsets are still popular, as iPhone users look for value for money. Canalys said Apple was looking at its best overall performance to date, thanks to the major changes it made to its portfolio in the third quarter. The strategy hedged Apple’s risk as it upgraded the iPhone in both design and user experience. Canalys noted also that while new technologies such as Face ID and bezel-less displays helped justify the hefty price for the iPhone X and maintain competitiveness with Samsung, Huawei and Google, having a larger portfolio allowed Apple to meet its overall shipment targets, and protect its market leadership in the premium segment.
