Arcep may use crowdsourcing to assess mobile coverage

French telecom regulator Arcep is considering using crowdsourcing as a more accurate way to measure mobile network coverage, reports blog.grandesville.org. The authority's latest field tests found that Orange France and SFR offered 98 percent population coverage in 3G, Bouygues Telecom 95 percent and Free Mobile 37 percent. An M2M crowdsourcing approach could be used to provide averages based on real connection speeds, rather than peak rates, along with other QoS indicators. Arcep said in March that it would look at new methodologies.
