Arqiva, Samsung launch 5G fixed-wireless field trial

Communications infrastructure provider Arqiva and Samsung have launched a field trial of 5G fixed wireless access technology in central London. This is the first field trial of the technology in the UK and Europe and is powered by Samsung's 5G network platform and customer premise equipment, and Arqiva's 28 GHz millimetre wave spectrum. The main aim of the trial is to demonstrate the stability of the technology and its potential as a cost-effective alternative to fibre connectivity. 

The 5G FWA system has three main parts - a radio access unit on the rooftop of Arqiva's Fitzrovia office links wirelessly to a CPE (router) located inside Arqiva's nearby headquarters. High-bandwidth connectivity is then provided by Samsung's 5G network system, with Samsung's virtualised core running on Arqiva data centre servers. The trial will run for four months.

5GIC researchers develop 'seamless' smart appliance protocol

Researchers at the University of Surrey's 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) are developing a new protocol to allow consumers to seamlessly control their smart devices, such as smart fridges, home appliance, wireless speakers and lights, without having to download multiple interfaces and apps. The team has secured funding of GBP 300,000 from Innovate UK to further develop and expand the protocol.

Arqiva sees strong FY growth across all areas

UK communications infrastructure and media services group Arqiva has reported record revenue and earnings for the year ending 30 June. Group revenue was up 7 percent on a reported basis to GBP 944 million, from GBP 885 million a year earlier, with reported EBITDA up 10 percent to GBP 467 million, from GBP 424 million. CEO Simon Beresford-Wylie said the strength of the financial performance was driven by the success of major programme roll-outs including 700 MHz clearance, DAB, 4G and smart metering.

Arqiva to deploy small cells in Kingston-upon-Thames

UK communications infrastructure company Arqiva has secured the exclusive access rights to street furniture in the Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames. The 10-year deal gives the company access to around 15,000 lampposts in the borough which it will use to deploy small cell technology. Arqiva will also install Wi-Fi access points on lampposts in high-traffic areas to provide free public access to Wi-Fi services. This is Arqiva's 13th contract of this kind in London.

Arqiva to install small cell technology across Lambeth

UK communications infrastructure company Arqiva has been awarded an exclusive access rights contract for street furniture in the London Borough of Lambeth. The 10-year contract gives Arqiva access to 15,000 lampposts across the Borough, which can be used to install small cell technology to boost 4G coverage and capacity. The Lambeth contract is Arqiva's 12th London Borough concession.

Arqiva to test 5G fixed-wireless in London with Samsung

Arqiva plans to test 5G services in London with Samsung. The trial is set to take place in the second half of 2017 in central London and will involve the deployment of an end-to-end 5G FWA network, operating in the 28GHz band. Arqiva owns a national licence in the UK for this spectrum, which is also the standard band being used for 5G trials in the US, Japan and South Korea.
