AT&T to start roll-out of mobile 5G in Dallas, Atlanta, Waco this year
AT&T has said it will be aggressively pushing 5G deployment this year and beyond with the introduction of mobile 5G in many cities, extending its 5G Evolution to more cities and expanding the virtualisation of its network. To help meet its goals, it will be opening a new 5G test lab in Austin, Texas. Mobile 5G will be launched by the end of this year in a dozen cities, including part of Dallas, Atlanta and Waco, Texas. It will also add more 5G capable mobile devices and smartphones to its lineup from early 2019. 

AT&T launched 5G Evolution last year and plans to offer the faster services broadly by the end of the year. It also launched LTE-Licensed Assisted Access (LTE-LAA) in parts of Indianapolis last year. The service is now also live in parts of Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco. AT&T also said it plans to virtualize 75 percent of its network by 2020, after reaching its 2017 goal of 55 percent.

The new lab in Austin will test systems, applications, equipment and devices from different vendors before these are rolled out. The lab is also equipped with an outdoor 5G testbed to trial a variety of 5G applications and real-world use cases, including the Advanced 5G NR Testbed System (ANTS), proprietary to AT&T. ANTS will let the carrier test unique and forward-looking features on a simulated 5G network for eventual standardisation and use on a commercial network. 

Initial mobile 5G deployments this year will be based on 3GPP standards and operate over mmWave spectrum.

AT&T claims world's first mobile 5G mmWave connection

AT&T made what it calls the world's first wireless 5G data transfer over millimetre wave using standards-based, production equipment with a mobile form factor device over the 8-9 September weekend, in Waco, Texas. The US operator also announced that it plans to introduce mobile 5G in parts of five additional cities, Houston, Jacksonville, Louisville, New Orleans, and San Antonio, in 2018.

Qualcomm, Huawei complete 3GPP-based 5G interoperability testing

Qualcomm Technologies, a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, and Huawei successfully completed 5G NR Interoperability and Development Testing (IODT) based on the 3GPP Release 15 global standard. Network operators testing 5G technology rises to 72 worldwide

A total of 72 network operators around the world are already testing 5G technology, according to data on the state of 5G trials released by networking testing specialist Viavi Solutions. The figure is nearly three times the number conducting trials at this time last year, with the pace of 5G field tests having rapidly accelerated during the past 6 months. Some 28 of the operators are currently reporting they are in field trials, with an additional 28 having announced forthcoming tests.

AT&T debuts commercial LTE-LAA technology in Indianapolis

AT&T deployed Commercial LTE-licensed Assisted Access (LTE-LAA) technologies in selected parts of downtown Indianapolis as part of its evolution to 5G. The company said it plans to expand LTE-LAA coverage in more areas of downtown Indianapolis by the end of 2017. The operator plans to deliver 5G in Indiana as early as late 2018. The operator said it's working closely with the City of Indianapolis to deploy the upgrades needed to support future technologies, like 5G.

AT&T launches '5G Evolution' in Indianapolis

AT&T has launched its '5G Evolution' service in Indianapolis, its second market after Austin. The operator reiterated plans to bring the faster service to over 20 metro areas by the end of the year. The pre-standard technology offers speeds twice as fast as the company's LTE network, using technologies such as 256 QAM, 4x4 MIMO and tricarrier aggregation. Customers with a Samsung Galaxy S8 or S8+ phone can take advantage of the 5G Evolution service.
