US operators are rushing to become the first to launch 5G services. AT&T announced that it expects to be the first with a launch of mobile 5G service in a dozen markets by late 2018. Verizon meanwhile announced a contract with Samsung to start commercial 5G fixed-wireless services in Sacramento, California in the second half of 2018.
AT&T has also been testing pre-5G standards for fixed wireless services. However, it is the first US operator to give a date for starting mobile services, which it said will be based on the recently released 3GPP New Radio standards. In addition to plans for offering mobile 5G to consumers this year, AT&T said it expects to trial 5G technology with businesses of all sizes across industries.
Verizon started 5G customer trials across seven US cities in early 2017, using Samsung equipment and mmWave spectrum for fixed-wireless pre-commercial service. The company said the trials showed that a single 5G radio was able to reach the 19th floor of a multi-dwelling unit, broadband service can be delivered in line of sight (LOS), partial LOS and non-LOS connections, and environmental factors, such as rain and snow, do not interrupt services.
Samsung will provide Verizon with commercial 5G home routers, 5G radio access units comprised of a compact radio base station and virtualized RAN elements, as well as 5G radio frequency planning services.
